Letter from the Chair of our Board of Directors

Dear Family and Friends of AccessPoint RI,

As you may be aware, Tom Kane, President and CEO, notified us in August of his intention to retire from AccessPoint RI.  While I was very sad “for us”, I was happy for Tom, because I don’t know anyone who has the level of commitment to human rights and dignity that spans close to 50 years.  Tom has tirelessly and commendably served at AccessPoint RI, as CEO, for over twenty years.  In addition, Tom’s work outside AccessPoint RI, thrice-elected leader of the Community Provider Network of Rhode Island and honored in 2005 by its members for his contributions, demonstrates Tom’s willingness to lead, at every level, his lifelong mission for social justice and human rights.  As a board, we will have some big shoes to fill as we execute the executive search for Tom’s replacement.

The Board wants to have an inclusive selection process, so we have engaged a Human Resources firm, Butler and Associates, to head APRI's search.   As part of the Executive Search process, we have formed a search committee, a segment of our Board of Directors.  We have asked Tom and key senior leaders of AccessPoint RI to weigh in on the qualities and competencies they would like to see in the next President and CEO.  Soon, we will be sharing the job announcement, which includes stakeholders’ feedback, on local websites, professional networks, and AccessPoint RI website.  It is important for us to ensure the next CEO understands our mission and is passionate about making a difference in the lives of the people we support, in addition to being a great listener, communicator, supporter, and open to new ideas and opportunities.  We are seeking the next CEO to lead our organization into the next decade, by embracing challenges, tearing down barriers and blazing new paths.
I am confident we will find this leader that will forge the next “GREAT” chapter in AccessPoint RI’s long history of service to individuals with differing abilities.
Warmest Regards,

Elissa C. O’Brien
